After a BA degree in Chemistry from Luther College and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from The Institute of Paper Chemistry, Steve worked 3 years at Union Camp Corporation in Savannah Georgia, in the Pulp and Environmental groups in the mill technical department, followed by 3 years at Caterpillar Tractor Company as a line set up inspector in Mt Joy, Iowa.Steve then moved to Neenah, Wisconsin, and worked 13 years at Kimberly Clark Corporation R&D center in process development. His role was to help develop an improved facial tissue base sheet. This new base sheet resulted in significant market share growth for KC. Later, Steve joined Fort Howard R&D to help develop a better feeling, low cost, 100% recycled base sheet. FH was purchased by James River Corporation, then by Georgia Pacific Corporation and finally by the Koch Brothers.During this time Steve led the development of two new papermaking technologies one of which was installed in two different mills resulting in new products and improved competitive positions. He has extensive experience in all areas of soft paper manufacture spanning conventional wet pressing to through-air-drying which has resulted in seventy US patents covering both product and processesSteve is presently retired and has his own small pulp and paper testing lab where he continues to explore the intricacies of paper making and is in preparation to patent them soon.
